Design & Formatting

John took up Adobe InDesign during his first year in journalism, formatting one page in each edition of the quarterly newspaper. Now, as Editor-in-Chief, John's role has expanded to producing and editing the full paper in addition to designing a page in each edition; after two years of InDesign experience, John's proficiency leads to high-quality newspaper production.

Below are pages and papers formatted and produced by John D'Souza.

People of The 'Ville

A WBN interview project
WBNpovtitle.png

My advisor John Fitzgerald and I created this project to give students more interview experience and try out the skills I presented to them, inspired by Interviewing: The Oregon Method by UO faculty.

Modeled on the Humans of New York series by Brandon Stanton, People of the ‘Ville tells the stories of Wilsonville High School one person at a time, from their POV. Each WBN staff member created profiles of three “people of The ‘Ville” by conducting interviews, taking pictures, and writing biographies.

Using the Story Collections feature in SNO, we compiled two 'chapters' of 36 people of The 'Ville each, showcasing the diversity of Wilsonville High School and the quality work of WBN staff members. Viewers can click on individual photos to read each interviewee's written biography (below).

People of The 'Ville — POV — Point Of View

Our acronym for this project is 'POV' which also stands for point of view. The double meaning of POV highlights the diversity of Wilsonville High School; this project allows us to "tell the stories of Wilsonville High School," one human at a time.

This was the debut year for People of The 'Ville, and this is just the start. Choosing three interviewees and publishing their story is an incredible learning experience for journalists, but also builds community within our school. People of The 'Ville is a statement that everyone's voice matters.
